A 2014 Compatible Introduction to the Blog

Red meeple

Oh, hey, are you still around?  All the other guests left already, so… woah!  Are you going to be alright?  Oh, no.  You’re not going anywhere.  Let me grab a few blankets, and you can use the couch to sleep off that quarter bottle of goldschlager you downed.

Okay, the bed’s ready.  The bathroom is down the hall and to the right, and if you need water or anything, you can grab a glass in the cabinet next to the fridge.  Anything else?  Well…

  • I’ve talked and written reviews for over three hundred games by now.  A number of those reviews are on this site, but you can also hear me argue ferociously with Jeffrey Norman Borbeau (and friends!) on the Power to the Meeple podcast.  If you’re more interested in game theory and good design, then maybe you’d prefer my posts on Board Game Philosophy?
  • The bread winner on this blog, however, are my Magic: the Gathering articles.  In According to Gatherer, we rate the best and worst cards Magic has to offer by looking at the way players vote.  No guesswork involved.  If the community wants to call Lightning Bolt the best Magic card ever, then who am I to judge?  I’m only here to comment on that terrible decision.  There’s are more articles in my general Magic category, but the real gem is the Magic: the Gathering Multiplayer and Casual Format Gateway: an ever-swelling index of casual Magic formats, which acts as a directory for the best sites on the internet to find more information about those formats.
  • If word games are your thing, however, then you might be interested in my Scrabble’s Two Letter Words series.  In it, I break down every two letter word in Scrabble, and give you a smack of trivia for each one.  Hopefully, you’ll never forget your two-letter words again!
  • If you’re into roleplaying games, I’m fond of my series on keeping the terror alive by Maintaining the Horror Campaign.  I also made a random wandering monster generator for all 30 Levels of Dungeon and Dragons Fourth Edition, as well as notes on what room zero (the theme) and room negative on (the setting) may look like in The Random Dungeon.  Or, if you’re interested in a bit of story time, when my group and I picked up the DC Comics Roleplaying game, I made a log of their journeys in DC Adventures.
  • I’m an avid reader, so it’s only natural for me to review books.  Unfortunately, I never do things the easy way.  In my Two Books series, I review two books simultaneously, often contrasting them back and forth, smashing them into each other again and again.  I haven’t done one of these in a little while.  Honestly?  Because it’s a hard to write this way.  There’s some good stuff in there, though.  I really should coerce myself into writing a few more…
  • Opinions, Unasked For, is what happens when I argue about things I’m not qualified to argue about.  That doesn’t make the articles bad.  I’m just saying that when I talk about exercise for gamers or the problem with the state of fantasy novels, that you should take my comments with a pinch of salt.

You’re probably going to feel terrible in the morning, so if you need to take some Tylenol, out of the bathroom cabinet, feel free.  If you need anything, I’ll be down the hall in my bedroom.  And don’t mind Dodger.  He might try to sleep in your… oh, you’re already asleep.  Good night.
